What Brother group can do to prevent further deforestation of the mangrove forests.
In the past, vast mangrove forests spread out along the coasts of Thailand. The original mangrove forests provided nursery grounds for small fish, crabs, shellfish, and shrimp, and feeding grounds for birds and monkeys. These various flora and fauna formed rich ecosystems. In the past half century, however, the mangrove forests have been rapidly diminishing due to the expansion of shrimp and salt farms. From 1961 to 1996, Thailand lost approximately 56 % of its mangrove forests. Since then, its indigenous ecosystem has been faced with the threat of extinction. This deforestation could also endanger the lives of the local people who live in the coastal areas where tsunamis pose a real threat. To improve this situation, BROTHER COMMERCIAL (THAILAND) LTD. (BCTL) began to provide support for mangrove reforestation in 2009.
To protect the diverse ecosystem in Thailand together with the local people.
The aim of this project is to promote reforestation by planting mangrove seedlings. Since this project began in 2009, several measures have been taken. These include donations equivalent to approximately one thousand mangrove seedlings and helping build a “Bamboo Wall” to protect seedlings against waves. So far, nearly fifteen hundred seedlings have been planted. Those which were planted in 2009 have been steadily growing. Today, small fish and crabs inhabit these mangrove roots. It means that ecosystems are gradually recovering in the mangrove forests. In 2014, two hundred and twenty six people in total participated in the tree planting activities, including employees at BCTL, its business partners, college students, as well as customers and members of the general public who applied through social network services. Many participants expressed a range of positive feelings, saying that some were glad to be awakened to the world around them, and others would like to continue everyday efforts to protect the natural environment. The tree planting experience inspired the local residents and now they are aware of the importance of environmental conservation efforts. As is the case with the reforestation project, these eco-friendly activities are gradually expanding.
Voice of a local Brother employee

Since I’ve taken over this mangrove reforestation project from my predecessor, this is the first time I participated in the tree planting activity. I worked hard with many participants, doing research in devastated mangrove forests and sorting seedlings. We still have a long way to go to restore the original mangrove forests in Thailand though, the seedlings we’ve already planted are growing, green areas are being expanded, and aquatic life is successfully increasing. I will continue to devote myself to the mangrove reforestation project.
