“Mangrove Reforestation Project in Thailand” worked on by Brother’s sales facility in Thailand
In the past, vast mangrove forests spread along the coastline of Thailand. The original mangrove forests provided nursery grounds for small fish, crabs, shellfish, and shrimp; and feeding grounds for birds and monkeys, and this flora and fauna formed rich ecosystems. In the past half century, however, the mangrove forests have been rapidly diminishing due to the expansion of shrimp and salt farms. From 1961 to 1996, Thailand lost approximately 56% of its mangrove forests. Since then, its indigenous ecosystem has been facing the threat of extinction. This deforestation could also endanger the lives of the local people who live in coastal areas where tsunamis pose a real threat. To improve this situation, Brother Commercial (Thailand) Ltd. (BCTL) has been providing support for local mangrove forest*1 protection and reforestation since 2009.
In October 2015, 281 individuals including BCTL employees and their families and friends, dealers, students, local volunteers, customers, and citizens solicited to participate via SNSs, took part in seedling planting activities. The participants helped each other plant 300 mangrove seedlings at locations where mud was deep.
As the mangrove forests have grown, many species of birds and aquatic animals have been observed. BCTL will continue with these activities.
