Recovering Lost biodiversity

Working together with employees and local people to nurture diverse ecosystems

Forests play an important role in biodiversity. They nurture a wide variety of life and provide us with blessings that assist us in our lives.
There are various causes for the destruction of forests and ecosystems, including development and climate change, and Brother develops their environmental conservation activities under the slogan "Brother Earth". Brother works to restore and sustainably preserve these ecosystems.

Reforestation alongside local communities: Japan

Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, located almost in the center of Japan, is home to many endemic plants of the Hida Highlands. The mountainous and hilly 28-hectare area is on the site of a former ski resort, built during a period of economic growth but later closed and neglected. It was named Brother Forests in Gujo, and tree planting activities began in 2008.

As a joint project with Gujo City, our employees and their families work with local residents twice a year, in spring and fall, to plant trees and remove weeds and vines that hinder tree growth. Since 2014, in cooperation with universities, a more effective tree planting plan was implemented and has helped to restore a rich ecosystem of the entire forest. We will continue our efforts to preserve the environment and make Brother Forests in Gujo a place loved by local residents.

Mangrove Reforestation Project: Thailand

Thailand's mangrove forests have been rapidly diminishing due to the development of salt pans and shrimp farming. 56% of the mangrove forests between 1961 and 1996 were lost. This loss is causing an ecological crisis and becoming a threat to the safety of residents in coastal areas affected by tsunamis and other disasters. To help ease this situation, Brother Commercial (Thailand) started to support the reforestation of mangrove in 2009.

Our activities include donating money towards the purchase of seedlings and planting and building barriers to protect them from the ocean's waves. For tree planting in the country in 2014, we invited our employees and their families, including business partners and people recruited using social networks to raise awareness of environmental activities.

It will take decades before Thailand's mangrove forests are restored to their original state, but Brother hopes that our awareness of environmental conservation will spread throughout Thai society by continuing to support this project.

Mangrove Reforestation Project in Thailand

SDGs goal 6 “ensure access to water and sanitation for all” including target 6.6 which aims to “upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable.” Additionally, SDGs goal 15, “life on land” includes target 15.2 which aims to protect and restore terrestrial ecosystems by “promoting the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally. Through Brother's tree planting activities for reforestation in Gujo City and the mangrove reforestation project in Thailand, Brother is engaged in continuous activities to protect the rich environment and ecosystems for the future.
